THE MINISTER

STEPHEN LINGWOOD

Welcome to Bank Street Unitarian Chapel. My name is Stephen Lingwood and I have been Bank Street’s Minister since September 2008.

I discovered Unitarianism when I was a student in Birmingham studying geology and biology. Since then I went on to study theology at Boston University before returning to this country to train for the Unitarian Ministry at Unitarian College Manchester. I am interested in many different areas of theology including the relationship of science to religion, interfaith dialogue, queer theology, Unitarian theology and how “liberal” churches can reach out to the world and have a mission. In 2008 I edited a book of Unitarian writings called The Unitarian Life: Voices from the Past and Present, which is a good book for finding out more about Unitarianism.

My personal spirituality is influences by many world religions, and I have dipped a toe into Sufism, but today I consider myself a radical and progressive Christian influenced by Anabaptism, Quakerism and Unitarianism. My faith is based on following the radical prophet Jesus who asked us to be on the side of the poor and oppressed. This is much more important than having the right “doctrines” about Jesus.

I am deeply honoured to serve as Bank Street Chapel’s Minister. We are a friendly, funny and loving congregation that I want to see grow and thrive. Why not join us on an adventure of the spirit?
