Every Thursday, good wholesome food is available, at very reasonable prices, in Chapel Hall. This not only helps Chapel funds, but provides a happy meeting place for many regular customers. It is only made possible by the dedicated team who do the cooking and serving every week. It is very easy to take them for granted, and perhaps it is time to record our appreciation and thanks for their efforts.
Congratulations!
Our Director of Music, Keith Bateson, tells us that Alessandro Mancini has passed his Grade Three singing examinations with a spectacularly high mark. Alessandro will be singing at Bethel Chapel at 7-30 on May 14th.
He also attended the “Chorister for a Day” event at Manchester Cathedral and after a days’ rehearsal, performed in the Cathedral at Evensong.
More congratulations to Alison Mack, the daughter of Janet and Ron Mack, who ran in the London Marathon on the 26th April. She was delighted to complete the event in the time of 3hrs. 53mins. She ran to raise funds for Bolton Hospice, which is such a worthwhile charity and close to the hearts of many Bank Street people. Her overall projected total is £2000, of which Chapel members have already donated £265. She wishes to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their kind and generous support of her in this event
Well done, Alison. A really great cause – and what a terrific time!
Last month, we reported on our visit to the Chocolate Factory. When thanking the organisers, we omitted to mention the great help given by Roy as a route-finder! Thanks a lot, Roy, and well done.
May Jack
We are sad to report the death, in mid April, of Mrs May Jack at the age of 95.
Mrs Jack was from a family who served Bank Street well for many years, and a stalwart former member of the Women’s League.
The funeral service took place at Overdale on April 30th, and was conducted by Stephen Lingwood.

Minister’s modest plea to his church
5:40pm Monday 20th April 2009
“Don’t call me Rev”—That is the polite request from Bolton minister Stephen Lingwood.
Having taken up a position as minister at Bank Street Unitarian Chapel, Bolton, last year, he was formally welcomed onto the roll of ministers of the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches at a ceremony in Chester on Friday.
It is customary for ministers to take the title of reverend, but Mr Lingwood says he feels that taking the title goes against Jesus’s teaching.
He said: “As a Unitarian, I am committed to the inherent and sacred worth of all people, and I feel designating some as more worthy of being revered than others is inconsistent with this belief.
“As a minister, I believe I am defined by my professional training, spiritual calling, and accountability, but it does not make me inherently more sacred or worthy than anyone else.”
